ITEM 1:CAA-NCR SUMMER SOCIAL – A DAY IN THE COUNTRY

Summer sun and cooling breezes – our Summer Social in Sharyn’s garden. Mark the above date on your calendar before it fills up with other summer events.  Come meet your fellow writers in a casual, congenial and celebratory atmosphere. We invite you to:

ITEM 2: CAROL STEPHEN, OTTAWA BRANCH MEMBER SELECTED AS A HOT OTTAWA VOICE

Carol A. Stephen, a member of the National Capital Branch, has been selected as one of four Hot Ottawa Voices. The four poets will be featured at Tree Reading Series on August 14 at Arts Court. Carol will also be doing a mini-launch of her first and second chapbooks at Arts Court on August 26^th at an event co-sponsored by Tree Reading Series and The Ontario Poetry Society. More details on the events in items 10 and 13.

ITEM 3:  ALGONKIAN NIAGARA WRITERS CONFERENCE: “NEW YORK COMES TO NIAGARA”

The conference is offering a generous discount to any writer who has previously attended one of Barbara Kyle’s Workshops or Master Classes, or for whom she has done a Manuscript Evaluation. The discount is $100, so instead of $495 for the conference the cost to you, if you qualify, would be $395.

“New York Comes to Niagara” is geared towards those who are writing or have written a novel, and is designed to introduce promising and talented writers to the professionals who can help them achieve their goal of becoming published. The agents and editors who attend are actively seeking new talent. Most importantly, writers will gain valuable insights into the commercial viability of their work-in-progress, along with critical feedback on how to improve it.

ITEM 5: 7TH ANNUAL INDEPENDENT PUBLISHER BOOK AWARDS ARE NOW OPEN

ITEM 6: SUBMISSION CALL FROM POSTSCRIPTS TO DARKNESS

We are looking for works of short weird and uncanny fiction (of up to 3000 words) for the third volume of our (semi)annual anthology.

We are open to a variety of approaches and styles, but are interested in original work that pushes and plays with(in) the boundaries of the fantastic, the marvelous, and the horrific.

While, as we are an unfunded and independent publication, we cannot currently afford to pay contributors, each will each receive two contributor’s copies of the volume, as well as the option of purchasing more copies at a low contributor’s rate.

While this is an open call with no fixed deadline per se, (meaning we will treat submissions on a first-read first-considered basis) we hope to make our editorial selection by February 2013, and to publish the volume by summer 2013.

Taking a poem down past the bones and rebuilding the marrow. Sometimes we attach to the concept or sound of a poem too early and let its bones harden. Let’s use the material of poems as malleable starting points. Bring half a dozen copies of a poem you want to tear apart using a few techniques.

Campfire Storytelling at the Billings Museum is Back!

 

English: The Billings Estate Museum. The house was built in 1828 by Massachusetts-born Braddish Billings. It is Ottawa’s oldest surviving house, though the Bytown Museum building is older. Historical Stories at the Bytown Museum

Every Thursday in the summer (July 19th to August 30th), the Bytown Museum is hosting a story series about the people and events that shaped Ottawa. Storytellers will start at 7p.m. sharp. This program is free and admission to the Museum is free on Thursday evenings.

STORY SWAP

On the first Thursday of every month (12 months a year), the Ottawa StoryTellers host a story swap / open stage. Admission is free, and everyone is invited to come and tell a story and / or listen to the stories. Light refreshments are served during the break. Stories should be 10 minutes or less and must be told and not read.

Sunday, August 19 2:00 p.m.  Elizabeth Radmore, author of Cushla: Almost Magic

Cushla—Almost Magic, Reflections of a Reformed Gypsy Girl, is the last novel in the Cushla trilogy. Elizabeth Radmore was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and emigrated to Canada with her father, mother, and two brothers in 1951. As a child in Ireland, she and her father had to leave home in search of work. They tramped the land, often sleeping under bridges at night for shelter, before eventually joining a band of gypsies for survival. This experience formed the basis for her first novel, Cushla—Memoirs of a Reluctant Gypsy Girl. Her second novel, Cushla—Gypsy Spirit, recounts the McKenna family’s eventful voyage across the Atlantic to Canada and the struggles they faced in a new and very different land. It, too, is based on the author’s own experiences.

• NEIL POSTMAN AWARD FOR METAPHOR (no fee) Rolling Deadline. Although primarily known as an educationist and a media critic, Neil Postman was, at his core, a “noticer”—and he particularly noticed what we do with metaphor and how metaphor shapes and creates our cognitive world. Postman maintained that words (and words, in truth, are metaphors) are as much the driver of reality as they are the vehicle. Consequently, metaphor was not a subject to be relegated and limited to high school poetry units wherein a teacher drones on about the difference between “like” and “as” and considers the job finished. For Postman, the study of metaphor was unending and metaphors were as crucial as they were omnipresent; they served to give form to and dictate experience. In honor and remembrance of Neil Postman, who died on October 5, 2003, we have established the Neil Postman Award for Metaphor. The motivation for the award is simple and two-fold: To reward a given writer for his or her use of metaphor, and to celebrate (and hopefully propagate) Postman’s work and the typographical mind. Each spring the editors will choose one poem from all of the submissions received by Rattle during the previous year. The author of the chosen poem will receive $500.
