Getting Yourself and Your Work Into the Media  Speaker: Randy Ray, Ottawa-area publicist

Randy’s presentation will look at a mix of old-school and new ways to get publicity. By old school, he means hammering on doors, calling editors/reporters and sending emails. By new school, he means using social media which he will touch on.

In Randy’s own words:  The gist of my presentation is that writing a book is the easy part and that the real work begins when an author must get publicity that will drive sales. I will explain that to land publicity for your project you must do plenty of networking and develop a solid list of up-to-date contacts. Then you must send each of your contacts a meaty, yet brief pitch that will catch their attention. I will also discuss following up the pitch and how getting turned down by one editor does not mean you cannot get publicity from another editor. I will explain some of the tricks I use to land publicity. I will illustrate my point with a number of anecdotes that demonstrate what I have done and continue to do to get publicity for my clients and my own projects.

Bio:  Randy Ray is an author, freelance writer and publicist. He was a reporter for the London Free Press in London, Ont. for 13 years, including three years as the paper’s Parliament Hill correspondent. Since leaving the newspaper in 1989, he has worked as a freelance writer and has had articles published in most major Canadian newspapers. He has co-written nine books about Canada and contributed to four others, handled media relations for a variety of clients and helped authors and businesses line up publicity in newspapers and on television, radio and the Internet.  He is a publicity director for Ottawa Independent Writers (OIW), a 160-member organization that represents the interests of authors, publishers, freelance writers and illustrators. He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Applied Journalism Degree from Ryerson University in Toronto. He is married to Janis and has three sons and a dog. In his spare time he plays the drums.

The CAA Emerging Writer Award honours a Canadian writer under 30 who shows the most promise in the field of literary creation. Instructor: Carolyn Brown, a freelance science and medicine writer and editor with 18 years’ experience at Canada’s two largest scientific publishers. As an editor, she works on manuscripts for journals, reports, and material for the public and trains writers and editors.

When to cite, how to cite, what to cite, and how to check it.

Policy paper? Major scientific study? Master’s thesis? Doctoral thesis?

Whether you’re the editor or the author, you need to get all the citations and their references correct. That’s your job. Learn how to do it according to Chicago Manual of Style, APA and many more style guides.

For writers and editors of any scholarly work, citation is a key skill. This seminar takes participants through the principles of citation. Understanding the elements of citation helps writers and editors move seamlessly from one citation system to another. We will review major citation systems and look at editing approaches.

ITEM 8: MAY OPL WORKSHOPS: PUBLISHING YOUR BOOK  NEW!

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE OTTAWA ROMANCE WRITERS ASSOCIATION

While several traditional publishers and bookstores have closed their doors, you have new opportunities to publish your book in print and digital formats. Successful traditionally- and self-published authors will describe the pros and cons of getting your book published by a traditional publisher versus using self-publishing platforms offered by Amazon Kindle Direct, Kobo, Smashwords, and now big New York-based publishers. As well, new players such as Amazon Publishing and agents offering publishing services will be discussed.

The Ottawa Romance Writers Association is partnering with the Ottawa Public Library to present this workshop twice as part of the OPL May 2013 Author Month schedule. The panelists are multi-published romance authors; however, the workshop content is targeted to all writers of book-length fiction and non-fiction.  Rhonda Douglas:  Winner of Newfoundland and Labrador Arts and Letters Competition and Memorial University’s Gregory J. Power Poetry Contest. Originally from Grand Bank, Newfoundland, Rhonda Douglas has published her poetry and fiction in literary journals across Canada and in New Zealand, with her writing earning prizes in the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts and Letters Competition and Memorial University’s Gregory J. Power Poetry Contest. In 2006, she won both The Malahat Review’s Far Horizons Award for Poetry and Arc’s Diana Brebner Prize. A graduate of the Humber School for Writers, Douglas has also studied at UBC’s Optional-Residency MFA Program in Creative Writing.  Rhonda’s Some Days I Think I Know Things: The Cassandra Poems came out from Signature Editions in 2008.

  Rocco de Giacomo: is a widely published poet whose work has appeared in literary journals in Canada, Australia, England, Hong Kong and the US. His work has most recently been published in The Fiddlehead, Queen’s Quarterly and The Antigonish Review. Rocco’s poetry has also been featured on the CBC. He is the author of numerous chapbooks including, in 2008, Catching Dawn’s Breath. In 2009, his first full-length poetry collection, Ten Thousand Miles Between Us, was launched through Quattro Books. In 2010, Ten Thousand Miles was longlisted for the ReLit Poetry Award. In 2011, it was selected for Poetry NOW’s 3rd Annual Battle of the Bards. Rocco lives in Toronto where he writes and participates on the council for the Art Bar Poetry Series.

RATTLE MAGAZINE CALL April 15^th DEADLINE, we want to see as many poems written by Single Parents as possible.  This is for the Fall 2013 issue.  The poems don’t have to be about parenting, but simply must be written by those who identify as single parents—as always, the criteria is mostly self-selecting; just be honest about how you feel.  We are also looking for personal narrative essays that are about parenting, and how it relates to and influences poetry. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: CARTOONING DEGREE ZERO: DESCANT’S GRAPHIC LITERATURE ISSUE. Submission deadline for this issue: June 7th, 2013. The comic strip, the funnybook, the graphic novel — whatever we call this melange of words and pictures, it all begins with the art of cartooning. This issue provides an opportunity to explore what cartooning looks like now, and where we find its limits. In writing that approaches the zero degree, Roland Barthes sees an “infinite freedom” shining forth, the creation of an “unexpected object” overflowing with possibilities. Can we say the same for cartooning degree zero? Contributors are encouraged to test out the affinities that exist between cartooning and poetry, comics and prose, drawing and writing. What are the stories that images tell, and what do they keep silent? What can comics recall about the past, or say about the present? What have we seen in the history of cartooning, and what can we expect for the future of the form? Descant welcomes cartooned strips, panels, and stories that address any topic and investigate the possibilities and boundaries of the medium. The not-for-profit Montreal International Poetry Prize is offering $20,000 for one original, unpublished poem of no longer than 40 lines written in any English dialect. • The Peter Hinchcliffe Fiction Award, sponsored by the St. Jerome’s University English Dept. Winning story: $1000. Deadline: May 28, 2013. This contest, is named in honour of Peter Hinchcliffe, who was instrumental in the founding of the magazine and has made an impact in the lives of many students in his longstanding role as lecturer at St. Jerome’s University. The $1000 top prize will be awarded for a work of short fiction by a Canadian (citizen or resident) writer who has not yet published a first novel or short story collection.  Though there is only one top prize, all submissions will be considered for paid publication ($250) in the magazine. • NEW! Pop Montreal and Matrix Magazine are thrilled to announce: Lit POP is back! Eileen Myles and Sheila Heti are confirmed as the 2013 judges! DEADLINE June 30, 2013. POETRY AND SHORT FICTION. The winners, one from each category, will receive a round-trip ticket to POP Montreal from September 25 – 29, 2013, a VIP pass to the Pop Montreal Festival, free accommodation at a bed and breakfast, fall publication in Matrix Magazine with full honorarium, and presentation at a special Matrix Lit POP event during the festival.
