ITEM 1: CAA- NCR MONTHLY MEETING TUESDAY, JANUARY 10, 2012
DO’S AND DON’TS OF MARKETING YOUR WORK NEW!
PANEL : DAVE MULLINGTON, EMILY-JANE HILLS ORFORD, AND J.C. SULZENKO
LOCATION: MAIN BRANCH, OTTAWA PUBLIC LIBRARY, METCALFE AND LAURIER 7:00 P.M.
The panel will discuss the do’s and don’ts of self-promotion, moderated by Sharyn Heagle, author and president of the CAA – NCR. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn about the successes and some of the pitfalls of self-marketing – what works and what doesn’t.
THE PANEL:
DAVE MULLINGTON, retired journalist, has published two non-fiction works, Chain of Office and Charlotte: The Last Suffragette. For the latter, he received the Ontario Historical Society’s Donald Grant Creighton Award this past June. Mullington began writing non-fiction books after taking early retirement following a 34-year career, working on newspapers across Canada, in Australia and in Hong Kong. For the last 19 years before retiring, he worked at The Ottawa Citizen as both reporter and copy editor.
EMILY-JANE HILLS ORFORD’S stories and novels reflect her love of writing about Canada and extra-ordinary Canadians. Herstories have appeared in History Magazine, Canadian Stories Magazine, and Western People. She’s written ten fiction and non-fiction books: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Ukulele Yukon, Letters From Inside, The Creative Spirit, It Happened in Canada, It Happened in Canada Book 2, Personal Notes, and The Whistling Bishop. An award-winning author, she was named a Finalist for the 2009 Next Generation Indie Book Awards for The Whistling Bishop.
JC SULZENKO’S poetry has been presented on radio and television and appears in several publications. She’s been featured at The Ottawa International Writers Festival and Ottawa Kid Lit Galas. JC has published six children’s books including Fat poems Tall poems Long poems Small and Boot Crazy. Her play for children about Alzheimer’s disease, What my grandma means to say, premiered at the Ottawa International Writers Festival (OIWF) in 2009, and is offered in The Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County’s education programs for youth. The storybook, adapted from the play, was launched at the OIWF in May, 2011. JC leads workshops for emerging writers of all ages.

THE MODERATOR:
SHARYN HEAGLE: Following a business career in Canadian private and public sectors in an administrative field, Sharyn Heagle moved to New England, worked in communications and was Contributing Editor of an association magazine. At the University of New Hampshire, she received two Writing Across the Curriculum awards, taught English as a Second Language. She earned a BA in Communications graduating with an MA in English in 1996. Sharyn then taught for two years at Shoin Women’s University in Kobe, Japan. Since returning to Canada in 1998, Sharyn has had work aired on CBC radio, been short-listed in the CBC Literary Awards and the Larry Turner Award contests, and published in Lichen literary magazine. Her first children’s story was self-published in 2006, and her novel, A Clear Range of Vision in 2008.

ITEM 4: BYWORDS.CA SUBMISSION CALL NEW DEADLINE

Bywords.ca considers previously unpublished poetry from emerging and established poets for our online monthly magazine. We consider work by current and former residents, students and workers of Ottawa. We also publish poems by contributors to our predecessor, the Bywords Monthly Magazine. ITEM 5: GEIST EMERGING WRITER OF THE MONTH
An enlightened online space for new writers to test-drive their work.
How it works: Emerging writers are invited to submit short written works online. Geist chooses and publishes one piece each month on a dedicated web page. Geist readers and like-minded people are then invited to comment on the featured work.
Who is eligible?
- Canadian students enrolled in secondary or post-secondary courses and/or writing workshops are eligible.
- The writer should have no more than 2 short works published in established print or online magazines, books or websites. (Blogs, zines and in-house school publications are exempt.)

ITEM 6: CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: WRITER-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM GREEN COLLEGE, UBC NEW!
DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 1, 2012
Green College at the University of British Columbia invites applications from Canadian writers normally resident outside the Lower Mainland of BC, for the position of Canada Council Writer-in-Residence at the College. The term of the residency will be three months within the period between September 1 and December 15, 2012, subject to funding approval.
The Writer-in-Residence will work with the Green College community through consultations and workshops, and will create and coordinate a public series of literary events, as part of the College´s academic programming for the UBC and local community. She or he will be expected to live at the College for the term of the residency, and will be provided with reimbursement for economy-fare travel (within Canada) to and from Vancouver, room and partial board during the stay, and a stipend of $18,000. Additional funding will be available to support the public series of events. For its 2012 residency the College seeks a writer of established reputation in any genre/s (at least two books in print or equivalent public recognition) and with significant previous experience of arranging and hosting literary events. Only complete applications received by postal mail by the deadline are accepted.

Anthology from Dagan Books is looking for “Stories having to do with lost, rare, weird, or imaginary books, or any aspect of book history or book culture, past, present, future, or uchronic. TESSERACTS SIXTEEN SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Feb. 29, 2012
From Edge Publishing, recently released the guidelines for the latest volume in their speculative anthology, which will be edited by Mark Leslie. They’re looking for stories and poems that “focus on art, music, literature and cultural elements which are integral to the story. ” This anthology is only open to Canadians citizens (including ex-pats), landed immigrants (aka permanent residents) and long time residents.
